To answer your question, no.

In my west area you'll find drug dealers, hitman for hire and loads of shit. Have never stepped my foot in there and I will keep it that way.

How much is your budget? London is reallly expensive when it comes to hotels and stuff - so you might be better off being somewhere outside of zone 1 and getting the tube in or staying in a hostel- I think they are about ?0 a night - MrG stayed in one near russel square which i cant' remember the name of but i'm sure he could give you pointers.

Otherwise I've done some research for work on cheap places to stay in central london and the cheapest hotels are the Tavistock - which does single rooms for ?0 a night and the Indian YMCA which is near Euston I think its about ?5 a night, depending on where you are working you might need to get a bus or a tube anyway.

Alternatively there are lots of 1 & 2 star places around victoria and earls court - you might not get your own bath room and you'll need to get on a tube.

Ohh though i did just check on expedia and the Strand Palace does have some good deals on at the moment.
